If you have back pain, you have probably heard a lot of opinions.
One person says to rest.
Another says to take medication.
Someone else says physical therapy, injections, or even surgery.
So what should you do?
Researchers followed more than 2,700 patients with low back pain over four years and compared the results of medical treatment versus chiropractic care.
The medical approach usually included:
- medication
- self-care advice
- exercise
- occasional physical therapy
The chiropractic approach included:
- spinal adjustments
- exercise
- physical therapy
- education and self-care
The results were interesting.
Patients receiving chiropractic care often reported:
- better pain relief during the first year
- better results when pain traveled into the leg
- greater improvement in long-term or chronic cases
The study also found something important:
The sooner people began care, the better they usually did.
Patients who waited often struggled longer. Patients who started earlier often improved faster and had fewer problems later.
That does not mean every person needs the same type of treatment.
But for many people with back pain, chiropractic is one of the safest and most effective places to begin.
The important thing is not waiting too long.
